In March 1794 Parliament responded to the invasion threat posed by Revolutionary France by passing an act that called upon the Landed Gentry or Ruling classes throughout the realm to initiate local defence plans that included the establishment of volunteer military formations...

A well researched and interesting history of the Ramsgate Volunteers by J P Kelleher from their establishment in 1908 to their replacement in 1908 by the Territorial Force.  Includes names, pictures, press cuttings etc.
